PLAYA – REVIEW by Alice Revel:

COFFEE BEAN, PLAYA VISTA

If you recall, Super Bowl Sunday was a beautiful day here in Playa Vista. Unseasonably warm but gorgeous and so I decided to walk over to the Coffee Bean in Playa 1. to get some iced tea and sit outside and enjoy the extraordinary gift of beautiful weather in mid-February. Now, getting some iced tea from the Coffee Bean doesn’t sound like too challenging an assignment, does it? I walked in and there was a bit of a line since like most businesses, the Coffee Bean doesn’t seem to have nearly enough help during this endless pandemic season. The listless staff that day was a small number of young people who seemed about as pleased to be working at the Coffee Bean as motorists online at the DMV. After four or five minutes of waiting in line, I placed my iced tea order and then politely and patiently waited for my name to be called.

Five minutes passed and then 10 and then 15. I felt like I was in one of those old black and white movies where the seasons were changing. Finally, I went up to the counter and asked the unhappy team member if my iced tea was ready. After all, all they had to do was pour it. The young lady I asked seemed puzzled and then after another three or four additional minutes, discovered that the order had been sitting there and she hadn’t bothered to call my name. Now, do you think that I received an apology for any of this? Perhaps not. There, of course, didn’t seem to be a manager around anywhere, just a bunch of unsupervised young people who seemed anxious to be done with work for the day so perhaps they could watch the Super Bowl.

PLAYA – COMMENTARY by Kurush Saadat, Marina del Rey:

What are some things you love as a result of the pandemic? Me: social distancing, people are forced to be cleaner: hygiene is king, I get to hide behind a mask, I don’t feel bad about telling people they are in my space, I love that I can disinfect gym equipment before I touch any of it (pre-pandemic I looked like an OCD freak in the gym), lighter traffic, fewer people at Mother’s and Venice beaches, less in-land riffraff at local bars, restaurant staff have to wear masks and gloves, I’m not spat on when people talk close to me, I don’t smell people’s bad breath, door handles are cleaner, public seats are wiped down, my wood floors are always clean cause no one comes over with who knows what on the souls of their shoes, real estate is off the hook (I’m a realtor), Zoom meetings (dress shirt and boxers).

1. ** Isn’t it hilarious how they fought tooth and nail to prevent DreamWorks from building in the Ballona Wetlands area, because they had to defend and preserve them for environmental reasonable blah blah, but now they ignore and are silent about the homeless vehicles and their trash permanently parked there? —- George Benitez, Westchester
