PLAYA – INTERVIEW: Eugen Beer (English) & Barbara McMahon (Scottish):

Vintage Menu Art

1. Why did you choose to conduct your business affairs in the Silicon Beach area? How did you get there?
–Barbara and I moved from New York (where we lived for nine years) to Los Angeles in November 2019. We did a test stay in Marina del Rey February to April 2019 after driving across the country from the East Coast and decided it – the weather and the space – really suited us. Trying to run our Vintage Menu Art business from an apartment in Manhattan was just too difficult, and we knew that a lot of our existing customers were West Coast based so it was an easy decision to make.

2. What has been your greatest success in your career? How has it influenced your business?
–Creating Vintage Menu Art has been utterly transformational and rewarding for both of us. We discovered that America was full of collections of menus that were mostly hidden and that some of them had terrific art both on the covers and inside. It is a lost art that pre-dates LP/Album art and book cover art by more than a century and has never had the appreciation it deserves. We rescue these old stained and battered restaurant and bar menus, and bring them back to life as contemporary wall art. People just love them and find the art to be really addictive.

3. What is your favorite business in the Silicon Beach area? What makes them special?
–Jeannie at Samy’s Camera (Playa Vista Rentals) keeps all the paper and ink we need in stock and is really great, plus we have to give a special shout-out to Mr. Printer (4439 Sepulveda Blvd., Culver City)…they cut all our special archival paper to the sizes we need.

4. How has working in Silicon Beach influenced the way you approach your business?
–The enthusiasm of our customers at the markets we do in Playa Vista and around Los Angeles has magnified just how special the work of finding and renewing these old pieces of restaurant ephemera is.

YES OR NO QUESTIONS:

Do you believe in ghosts?
–NO. But there is certainly some weird energy around.
Have you ever travelled outside of the U.S.?
–We’re both from the U.K. and have been lucky enough to live in Italy, Australia and Scotland before coming to the U.S.
Are you scared of rollercoasters?
–Not scared, just hate them.
Have you ever been skydiving?
–NO. But, Barbara has wing-walked.
Do you like hiking?
–We love hiking and used to go for long ones with our wonderful dog Bones when he was with us.

Leading Realtor, Nancy Pelegrino, Vastly Expanding Business Efforts in 2022:

Renowned Southern California realtor Nancy Pelegrino has inspiring goals for the year of 2022 in a post-pandemic market. In a time that has been challenging for everyone, Pelegrino still holds a positive outlook on the year ahead. When asked what her thoughts are for the new year, she said, “Never, ever, be negative about the opportunities to be successful, but remember to do only what you really love! Focus, be positive, but remember to laugh every day and make sure that your clients know you can be trusted 100%.”

These are comforting and motivating words to hear in a time that is still marked by some uncertainty of the future. California real estate has been hectic in recent times, and potential buyers want to make sure they are with someone they can count on. Pelegrino will always give honest answers and help clients get what they want. “I won’t waste your time,” Pelegrino stated. The California real estate market is competitive, and although the market is cooling down it is still fast-paced. “You have to be ready to pull the trigger if you like the property and be a very strong buyer in multiple offers.”

In 2022, California’s median home prices are expected to increase 5.2% to $834,000. Housing affordability is also expected to drop by 3%, according to the California Association of Realtors. In addition, as the trend of remote working carries on, there will continue to be a shift in housing demand to more affordable locations. This slight decline will be a sigh of relief to potential homebuyers. There will also be more homes available for sale, and therefore less competition when making an offer. However, it remains crucial to have a knowledgeable realtor to guide the process.

Pelegrino helps buy and sell estates, homes, condos, residential income, commercial property, any and every real estate need there may be. She provides service to buyers, sellers, and real estate investors ranging from Malibu to the South Bay, from Marina del Rey to Los Feliz. Buying or selling a home is one of the most exciting, but agreeably also one of the most stressful things in life.

Hey Neighbors, I’m not sure if it’s been announced publicly yet, but a client using my CallMyDriver.net car service told me that the entire section of Admiralty Way, starting after the Ritz Carlton all the way to the library, including restaurants like Tony P’s, etc., will be knocked down to develop a high-end shopping mall with many of the Rodeo Drive luxury brands. 2022-2025. —- Daniel Resnick, Del Rey
